What does a contracted IS professional do onsite?

The duties of an onsite administrator vary from network to network. Depending on what kind of network you have and what you use it for, the administrator will perform the duties required to ensure that your data is always there when you need it. However, there are some duties that are common to all types of networks:

  • Adding, removing, changing user info in the security database.
  • Evaluating & Improving network performance.
  • Configuring and coordinating a security plan.
  • Ensuring all anti-virus measures are current and working.
  • Providing technical support to your end users.
  • Ensuring that all applications are the most current version.
  • Doing regular Maintenance on systems and software

The duties listed above are but a small sampling of what could be done to your network on a daily basis to ensure that your network continues to run at peak levels. Many small to mid-size companies seem to fall short in the area of advanced planning and network growth. The common misconception is that once a computer network is installed and running it will continue to serve your growing company for the foreseeable future. That is not always the case. As your business grows so should the tools available on your computer network. There are literally hundreds of thousands of add-ons available for your computer network to enhance its usefulness to your organization. Large companies hire teams of network engineers to keep them on the cutting edge of technology. Can you afford to fall behind? Does all this talk of "E-Business" make you shake your head in confusion? Growing your network is as important as growing your business. What starts out a small client-server network can grow into a multi-site wide area network with remote access, an Intranet, and strong ties to E-Business. Imagine being able to work from home as easily as you work from the office. This is what growing your computer network is all about. There are thousands of FREE utilities available to enhance your computer systems if you only knew about them. Having an Onsite Network Administrator means that you can ask them to provide you with the tools you need for business. Most people are surprised at how much they can improve their system with little to no cost.

You installed a computer network because you want to have a more efficient way to share information throughout your company. A contracted onsite administrator gives you the technical know-how of the big boys at a fraction of the price. Installing a computer network is a large investment and one that means a lot to your company. Ask yourself one simple question. How important is my data to my business?
